Within the area of management and social sciences, the research conducted at SMI is located at the interface between strategic management and innovation. The current research comprises the fields of Knowledge Management, Open Innovation, User Innovation, Competitive Strategy, and Growth Strategy. Our core objective is to broaden the current scope of academic contributions in these fields in the form of conference presentations, journal articles, books, and research reports.
We engage in theory building and conduct profound empirical research using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Committed to academic work, our focus is on basic as well as applied research. In order to ensure the latter, we are offering research-based insights to managers through targeted publications, conferences, and workshops.
We believe that networking and partnering with peers is a an crucial element of modern academia. Therefore we cooperate with other academic groups that share our ambition. With those, we discuss and review our work while constantly expanding our capabilities. Cultivating our friendship with our sister university EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland, as well as institutions such as the University of Zurich (Zurich, Switzerland), MIT (Boston, USA), Harvard University (Boston, USA), HSG (St. Gall, Switzerland) and Hitotsubashi University (Tokyo, Japan) is essential to us.
